Product packaging is a very important consideration, both for a producer and a consumer. Here are my thoughts:
I am inherently against flexible/disposable plastic. Plastic is everywhere. Durable plastics have their place, but I believe that flexible, single-use plastics need to be actively minimized in our environment. The bag I use for my granola is a wood cellulose blend that is 100% compostable. It may look like plastic, but don’t be fooled. It’s not!
I get frustrated at excessive packaging. It carries a large relative carbon footprint, and acts primarily to deceive customers into feeling that they are getting more value than they really are. So I introduced what I call a True-To-Size package. It wraps tightly around the product and decreases the raw materials necessary to produce it. This generates a coefficient of sustainability that is carried through the entire product life cycle.
My True-To-Size package means that it is an effective, efficient transport vehicle for the product as opposed to being a wasteful advertisement that happens to have some product in it! So my granola may have a smaller profile on the shelf than the competition, but the truth is that it is actually bigger. Pick it up and you can tell immediately. There is heft to it. That is because I offer a 15 ounce package instead of the 9-12 ounces that most everyone else has.
The minimalist compostable paperboard sleeve that fits around the bag lets you see the actual product from all sides. Nothing is hidden. You can see EXACTLY what you are buying.
No trickery or deception. 100% recyclable/compostable. Low carbon footprint. True quality. True value. That’s a package of granola I feel proud to make, and you can feel proud to buy!
